Urban Slum Challenge

Nita Pyne :- The Diocese of Durgapur opened a new Child Study Center named “ Pratiksha” in the Durgapur United Church Compound on 24th  May 2011.  This Study Center will work with the children from the slums of Lightpukur area located in Mahiskapur, Benachity  .  The inhabitants of this area are migrated people from Bihar, who have come in search of jobs in Durgapur.  Some of them have been there for over a decade.  Both the parents are daily labourers in the Steel Plant and their job is very uncertain.  Their children grow up on the streets and do not go to school.  They also do not have a proper meal in the day time as neither their fathers or mothers are at home to cook their meals.
The Diocese of Durgapur has opened two centers one at Benachity and the other at Gammon Bridge area.  Presently, fifty-five children are getting proper education, evening snacks, school dress, books etc from the center.  We are indeed thankful to Uniting World, Australia for their support for this programme.
